Jessica Hickok, new board member, has published a great post on her blog about World Diabetes Day, which is today. In it, she talks about both the scope and the personal issues of living with diabetes:

How in the world can you not feel the desperate need for a cure for this disease that affects so many of us? This epidemic has 246 million people dealing with the daily injections, blood sugar tests, doctor appointments, carb counting and everything that comes along with this wretched disease. I feel their pain (literally) when it comes to just the constant nagging voice in the back of your mind saying things to themselves like “I wonder what my blood sugars are” or “why am I so thirsty?” It’s exhausting.

Google Needs To Recognize

One of our awesome volunteers, Jessica, brought this campaign to our attention. We’d like to add our support for the project. Most people are familiar with the Google doodles. It’s when Google modifies their logo for a specific holiday or event. You may have seen it recently during the Olympics.

With World Diabetes Day approaching on November 14th, now seems like a great time to ask Google for a doodle for diabetes. The petition is at DiabetesDoodle.com. Take a moment and sign the petition if you’d like.

(One last note, after you sign the petition, you will be presented with a donation screen. That is not a donation to JDRF. It’s a donation to iPetition, the company hosting the petition. You do NOT have to donate to sign. Simply sign and you’re done unless you care to donate to iPetition.)

Fiesta Fundraiser!

Four local Casa Gallardo restaurants will be donating 25% of their total food sales generated by our supporters on Sunday, October 5th, between noon and 10pm. Simply bring the attached flyer in with you and help raise funds for diabetes research. The specific restaurants are listed on the flyer.

Family Fun At The Carpenters Hall

The Schmidt family and the Laramie family have put together a ‘Fmaily Fun Night’ to benefit JDRF. Here are the details of their all-ages event.

Date: Friday, September 26, 2008, 7pm - 11pm
Where: Carpenters Hall, 1401 Hampton Ave, Saint Louis, MO 63139
Admission: FREE! (Donations accepted in lieu of admission.)

Live music will be provided by Finger on 9!
Bingo, silent auction and a dessert/bake sale!
Snacks and soda provided!

All are invited to this one-of-a-kind event which benefits the JDRF Walk teams of “Hope for Holly” and “Movin’ for Mandy”. These teams are raising money for the 2008 Walk to Cure Diabetes in Forest Park on Sunday, September 29th and all proceeds from this event will benefit JDRF.
